The Altınoluk Baths are a historic Ottoman hammam in Edremit District of Balıkesir Province on the northern Aegean coast of Turkey, in a resort town set between the olive-covered slopes of Mount Ida (Kaz Dağları) and the calm waters of the Gulf of Edremit — the ancient Gulf of Adramyttium, named for the city that controlled this fertile corner of the Troad. Altınoluk's name (Golden Gutter) evokes the distinctive golden-coloured natural drainage channels of the area, and the town's setting between sacred mountain and calm sea — in a landscape associated with Trojan War mythology and the assembly of the Olympian gods on the summit of Ida — gives it an unusually resonant natural and mythological character. The hammam served the olive-farming and fishing community of this Aegean coastal town with the essential weekly bathing ritual of Ottoman provincial life.

Insider tip — Altınoluk on the Edremit Gulf sits at the foot of Mount Ida (Kazdağı) — the mountain from which, in Homer's Iliad, the gods of Olympus watched the Trojan War unfold on the plains below. The historic baths of Altınoluk serve a coastal resort town beneath the mythologically charged peak where Paris judged the beauty contest of the goddesses, in a landscape of olive groves and oxygen-rich pine forest celebrated as one of the healthiest microclimates in Turkey.
