Ağabey Baths

The Ağabey Baths (Elder Brother Baths) are a historic public hammam in Kadıköy District on the Asian shore of Istanbul, the former ancient Greek colony of Chalcedon that became one of the Ottoman capital's most important Asian suburban districts. Kadıköy today is one of Istanbul's most vibrant and culturally diverse neighbourhoods, known for its independent bookshops, music venues, and food markets, but its hammam heritage reflects a time when this Asian-shore community's social life revolved around the neighbourhood bath, the local mosque, and the weekly market. The Ağabey Baths — named after a patron known familiarly as Ağabey (Big Brother/Elder) — served the Asian-shore community of Istanbul with the bathing culture that was as central to life on the Bosphorus's eastern bank as anywhere in the Ottoman capital.
