Çarşı Baths (Kalecik)

The Çarşı Baths (Market Baths) of Kalecik are a historic Ottoman hammam in Kalecik District of Ankara Province in north-central Anatolia, a small town on the Kızılırmak River known for its wine production — Kalecik Karası, the distinctive red grape variety named after the town, produces some of Turkey's most celebrated indigenous varietal wines. Named for their location serving the commercial quarter of the weekly market, these baths formed part of the essential civic ensemble of a small Anatolian market town where mosque, bazaar, and hammam collectively sustained the community's religious, commercial, and hygienic life. The Çarşı Baths served the wine-growers, traders, and farmers of a prosperous Kızılırmak valley district whose agricultural heritage has given it an enduring regional identity built around one of Turkey's most distinctive native grape varieties.
