The Arab Baths of Palma de Mallorca are among the most important surviving monuments of Islamic civilization on the Balearic Islands, located in the historic center of Palma on the street known as Can Serra, dating from the eleventh century when Mallorca was part of the Taifa kingdom of Dénia. These baths are one of the very few examples of Islamic architecture remaining in Mallorca after the Christian conquest of 1229 under James I of Aragon, which transformed the island's cultural and built landscape. The baths feature a domed chamber supported by ancient columns with capitals repurposed from earlier Roman and Visigothic buildings, reflecting the characteristic Moorish practice of architectural spolia that gives these intimate and beautifully lit chambers their distinctive aesthetic.

Insider tip — The Arab Baths of Palma (Banys Àrabs) are among the few remnants of Madina Mayurqa — the Moorish city that flourished on Mallorca during the 10th-12th centuries before the Christian conquest by James I of Aragon in 1229. This rare surviving hammam, with its dome pierced by star-shaped skylights supported on columns recycled from earlier Roman buildings, is one of the most evocative reminders of the Balearic Islands' Islamic past in a city better known today for its Gothic cathedral and Mediterranean tourism.
