Mitani Onsen is a historic hot spring in the Mitani district of Gamagori City, Aichi Prefecture, overlooking the sheltered waters of Mikawa Bay within the Mikawa Bay Quasi-National Park, regarded as the oldest hot spring resort in Aichi Prefecture with a history that has established it as the most venerable thermal bathing site among the four hot spring areas that together form the Gamagori Onsenkyō cluster. The calcareous and simple mineral waters of Mitani Onsen have been enjoyed by visitors from the Tokai region for generations, and the scenic location above the protected bay with its mild climate, rich marine biodiversity, and nearby oyster and seafood aquaculture adds considerable natural appeal to the thermal experience. Mitani Onsen represents the tradition of resort hot spring culture in the area sometimes called the Riviera of Japan, where the warm climate and sheltered coastal environment have attracted recreational visitors from the Nagoya metropolitan area since the Meiji period.

Insider tip — Mitani Onsen draws calcium-rich thermal waters from beneath the lowland plains of Nishio in Aichi Prefecture, offering a restorative soak within easy reach of the Nagoya metropolitan area. The mineral-dense water is known locally for its bone-strengthening properties and its ability to ease chronic fatigue. The bathhouse has been modernised with indoor and outdoor pools while retaining a friendly neighbourhood feel. Combine a visit with a tour of Nishio's famous matcha tea fields, which produce some of Japan's finest ceremonial-grade green tea.
