Yagen Valley

Yagen Onsen is a hot spring in the former town of Ohata, now part of Mutsu City in the Shimokita Peninsula of Aomori Prefecture, at the northernmost tip of Honshu, situated within the Shimokita Peninsula Quasi-National Park where the wild and sparsely inhabited landscape of wind-swept moors and ancient beech forests preserves the character of a forgotten corner of Japan. The Shimokita Peninsula, shaped like an axe head pointing into the Tsugaru Strait toward Hokkaido, is famous for the sacred Osorezan, a volcanic crater lake associated in Japanese folk belief with the realm of the dead, where itako shamanic mediums once communicated with deceased ancestors during the annual summer festival. The sulfurous and acidic waters of Yagen Onsen, with their strong volcanic character, complement the otherworldly atmosphere of the Shimokita landscape, providing intensely therapeutic bathing in a region where volcanic energy, sacred tradition, and untouched wilderness combine to create one of the most distinctive environments in all of Japan.
