To Sua Ocean Trench on Upolu island in Samoa is one of the most photographed natural swimming experiences in the Pacific — a vast circular pit some 20 metres across plunging through volcanic rock to a turquoise pool connected by an underground tunnel to the open sea, where the tide flows in and out bringing fresh ocean water through the sea caves. The chloride-rich seawater in the trench, warmed by the tropical sun and surrounded by the lush tropical garden landscape of Samoa, creates a bathing experience of extraordinary natural beauty and geological drama. To Sua — meaning Large Hole in Samoan — is reached by ladder descending from the clifftop garden into the rock-walled pool below, with ocean waves and sea light filtering in through the underwater cave connection.
