Discovered in 1907 by the Tayal people, the Guguan hot springs on the outskirts of Taichung rank among Taiwan's oldest hot spring resorts. Developed during the Japanese colonial period, they once served as a retreat for the Japanese imperial family and senior officials, and still retain traces of that era's Japanese hot-spring culture rooted in the Meiji period.
It is in this lush mountain setting that HOSHINOYA Guguan, Hoshino Resorts' first luxury hot-spring property in Taiwan, opened in June 2019, blending contemporary Japanese design with the island's natural scenery. The parent house, founded in 1914 by Kuniji Hoshino in Karuizawa around a natural spring, extends a century of Japanese hot-spring history into a tranquil garden ringed by mountains.
