Bir Al Gebel Hot Spring in the Dakhla Oasis of Egypt's Western Desert, located in the Dakhla depression of the New Valley Governorate, is a ferruginous artesian well whose iron-rich warm water emerges in one of the most isolated and historically layered oasis landscapes in the Sahara. Dakhla Oasis, with its ancient ruins of the Roman settlement of Mut al-Kharab and the medieval Islamic town of Al-Qasr, has been continuously inhabited for thousands of years sustained by artesian groundwater from the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System — one of the world's largest non-renewable aquifers. Bir Al Gebel's iron-bearing thermal waters represent one component of this ancient groundwater resource that has sustained human civilisation in the deep Sahara for millennia.
