Disko Island Springs on Disko Island in Disko Bay, western Greenland, are chloride-rich geothermal springs in one of the Arctic's most extraordinary natural environments — Disko Island, at 8,578 km², is the largest island in the western North Atlantic, a volcanic plateau of black basalt whose geothermal activity produces the rare combination of warm springs and permafrost, hot ground and icebergs in the same landscape. The island's geothermal activity is a surface expression of the volcanic hotspot that created the Greenland-Iceland-Faeroe Ridge, and its warm springs stand in dramatic geological contrast to the surrounding Arctic sea ice, calving glaciers, and sub-zero temperatures. Disko Island's springs are accessible only during the brief Arctic summer navigation season and represent one of the world's most remote thermal experiences.
