Phonavan Hot Spring

Phonavan Hot Spring is a natural thermal site in the Nam Ken river basin area of Xieng Khouang Province, northern Laos, where bicarbonate-rich warm waters emerge near the regional capital of Phonsavan in one of Laos's most historically significant highland provinces, known both for the prehistoric Plain of Jars and for the extensive wartime destruction suffered during the 1964–1973 bombing campaign. The springs provide straightforward therapeutic bathing in a landscape that is simultaneously one of the most archaeologically fascinating and most war-affected in all of Southeast Asia, where unexploded ordnance clearance continues alongside the recovery of cultural and tourist infrastructure. The bicarbonate water composition offers gentle, alkaline bathing consistent with treating the musculoskeletal stress prevalent among the farming and herding communities of the Xieng Khouang plateau.
