The thermal area near Mansa in Luapula Province, Zambia, is a natural geothermal zone in the lake district of northern Zambia near the Democratic Republic of Congo border, where lightly mineral oligomineral water surfaces from the ancient basement rocks of the African craton in a landscape of lakes, rivers, and miombo woodland. The Luapula valley, historically important as a cradle of Bemba and Luvale culture and as part of the Zambia-DRC copper belt hinterland, provides a culturally rich African context for these natural thermal springs. The Bangweulu wetlands, Luapula River, and the abundance of lakes including Lake Mweru make the Mansa region one of Zambia's most water-rich landscapes.
