Inuu Wellness Center draws bicarbonated thermal spring water in Escaldes-Engordany, the thermal district of Andorra whose very name, from the Latin scalda meaning hot water, records the geothermal springs that have defined the settlement's character since the monks of the Sant Marti de la Cortinada monastery first channelled the waters in the eleventh century for washing, heating, and communal bathing in the cold Pyrenean winters. Escaldes occupies the valley floor at the confluence of the Valira del Nord and Valira d'Orient rivers where the geothermal heat is greatest, its traditional escaldarium laundry buildings where women washed clothes in spring-heated pools surviving into living memory alongside the modern spa towers that have replaced the artisanal hot water economy with leisure and medical tourism. The Inuu centre draws the same ancient spring waters in a contemporary wellness format, its pools, saunas, and treatment rooms using the Pyrenean geothermal resource in a country where thermal water has been the defining geological and cultural fact of daily life since the founding of the parishes in the medieval period.
