Terme Arzni draws bicarbonated mineral springs in the Arzni gorge of the Hrazdan river north of Yerevan, a Soviet-era sanatorium complex set in a dramatic canyon of pink volcanic tuff whose walls of tuffite and basalt rise above the rushing river in the ancient volcanic highland that forms the geological foundation of Armenian civilisation. Armenia's mineral spring tradition goes back to antiquity and the Arzni springs, particularly their carbonated waters, have been part of the regional bathing and drinking tradition since the nineteenth century, when Russian military physicians first documented them during the Caucasian campaigns. The gorge setting below Arzni, within forty kilometres of the perpetual snow line of Mount Aragats, the highest summit entirely within Armenia, and with Mount Ararat visible on clear days across the Araxes plain in Turkey, places the spa in the geographical heart of a landscape whose volcanic geology, ancient Christian civilisation, and contested national memory give every hillside spring in Armenia a significance that extends far beyond the merely physical.

Insider tip — Mount Ararat is the national symbol of Armenia — although it has lain on Turkish soil since 1921, it features on the Armenian coat of arms. Bathing in the thermal springs under the gaze of Ararat — the mountain of Armenian identity standing on foreign soil.
