Aktiv Hotel Gesundheitszentrum is situated in Mariazell, Styria, Austria's most important pilgrimage destination and one of Central Europe's major Catholic shrines, where the Basilica of Mariazell has drawn pilgrims since the 12th century to venerate the miraculous wooden statue of the Madonna of Mariazell — a devotion that attracted the Habsburg emperors themselves, including Maria Theresa and Emperor Franz Joseph, who visited repeatedly, making Mariazell simultaneously a site of deeply popular religious faith and imperial piety. The journey to Mariazell on the famous Mariazellerbahn — a heritage mountain railway operating since 1898 and still running narrow-gauge steam and vintage electric trains through spectacular Alpine scenery — is in itself considered a pilgrimage experience by many visitors.
