In Bad Fischau-Brunn, Lower Austria, the soothing qualities of the clear spring were already put to use by the Celts and the Romans. The site appears in historical records as early as 1363, and a first bathhouse for visitors was built in 1771, laying the groundwork for the region's spa tourism.
From 1898 onward, Archduke Rainer had the whole complex rebuilt and redesigned, reopened in its current form in 1900. Destroyed during the fighting of 1945, it was rebuilt after the war, then bought in 1992 by the municipality of Bad Fischau-Brunn, which has run it directly since October 2012 after centuries under aristocratic ownership.
