Galaalti is a remote mountain spa village in the Lerik district of the Talysh Mountains in southern Azerbaijan, near the Iranian border, where bicarbonate and siliceous mineral spring waters filter through the ancient geological formations of one of the most biodiverse mountain ranges in the Caucasus region. The Talysh Mountains and the surrounding Hirkan National Park, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserve one of the last remnants of the ancient Hyrcanian forest — a subtropical forest ecosystem that has survived since the Tertiary period, over 11 million years ago, covering the mountain slopes with relict species of ironwood, silk acacia, Caucasian persimmon, and ancient chestnut. The Lerik district and the Talysh mountain communities are studied by gerontologists for their exceptional longevity statistics — the region has produced some of the oldest documented individuals in the Caucasus — making the Galaalti mineral springs a destination associated with one of the most intriguing longevity clusters in the world.

Insider tip — The Lerik region in Talysh is documented for its population of centenarians — the Azerbaijan Institute of Gerontology has studied several dozen people aged 120+ living in these mountain villages. The mineral springs may play a role.
