About 20 km from Skopje, Katlanovska Banja owes its reputation to the Romans, who were the first to make use of its waters as early as the year 340, according to construction remains found on site. Byzantines and later Ottoman dignitaries followed: the governor of Skopje, Hafiz Muhammad Pasha, had a welcome inscription carved into a stone slab still visible today, while circular chambers cut into the rock testify to Ottoman-era bathing use.
The site's first hotel was built in 1934, though most of today's infrastructure dates from the 1960s to the 1980s. Three hotels and several guesthouses now welcome around 10,000 visitors a year, in a setting still shaped by this layered history running from Roman baths to Ottoman-era pools.
