At the foot of Kozhuh, Bulgaria's only volcano, extinct since the 4th century BC, the village of Rupite owes its fame to Baba Vanga, the blind Bulgarian mystic who spent her final years there, regarding the site as a distinctive source of energy. It was she who chose the location, in 1992, for the Saint Petka memorial church, built in 1994 through her foundation and now a place of pilgrimage.
The surrounding hot springs emerge at 71 to 78°C before being cooled for bathing, with free access open day and night. At the base of Kozhuh, volcanic rock pyramids also rise from the landscape, forming together with the church and Vanga's former house a site that blends geothermal nature with local history.
