The Spa Tamina Gorge experience at Bad Ragaz in St. Gallen canton is the original and most historically dramatic expression of the Bad Ragaz thermal tradition — a journey into the Tamina Gorge itself, the narrow limestone canyon where the thermal spring has been harnessed since 1242, first by Benedictine monks who sent sick pilgrims into the gorge on ropes to soak in the naturally warm water flowing from the rock walls. Today the gorge is accessible by a protected walkway through its spectacular vertical limestone walls to the spring source, where the 36.5°C oligomineral water emerges from a crack in the rock that has been channelled with increasing sophistication over 800 years. The Tamina source waters — pure, warm and essentially mineral-free — are then piped to the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz and the Tamina Therme spa complex in the valley below. This combination of geological spectacle, medieval spa history and the beauty of the Rhine valley landscape makes Bad Ragaz's thermal heritage one of the most layered in Switzerland.
