At the foot of Mount Li, roughly 25 kilometers from Xi'an, Huaqing Pool holds nearly three millennia of Chinese imperial history. Rulers of the Zhou, Qin and Han dynasties already built palaces here, before Emperor Xuanzong had a vast complex of bathing pools built around the hot spring in 747. The site owes much of its fame to the romantic legend of Xuanzong and his consort Yang Guifei.
