Huaqing Hot Springs (Huaqing Chi) at the foot of Lishan Mountain near Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, are the most historically celebrated thermal springs in China, used by Chinese emperors for over three thousand years and immortalised in Chinese poetry and literature as a symbol of imperial luxury and romantic tragedy. Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty built the most magnificent of the palace complexes here for his concubine Yang Guifei, whose story became one of China's most celebrated love tragedies. The sulfated, calcium-rich waters are now accessible to visitors within a large cultural park where restored Tang Dynasty pavilions, pools, and gardens reconstruct one of the most storied imperial spa complexes in world history.
