Changbai Mountain Hot Springs, located in Jilin Province near the North Korean border at the foot of the Changbai (Baekdu) volcanic massif, are sulfurous and oligomineral springs emerging from one of East Asia's most geologically significant volcanoes, whose caldera contains Tianchi (Heaven Lake), one of the world's largest and deepest crater lakes. The springs emerge at temperatures up to 82°C in several clusters around the mountain's flanks, their sulfurous odour and brilliant white mineral deposits marking them unmistakably as products of active volcanic geology. Changbai Mountain is sacred in both Korean and Manchu cultures, and its thermal springs are embedded in a rich tapestry of geological wonder, biodiversity, and cross-border cultural mythology.
Insider tip — The hot springs of Changbai Mountain erupt from the flanks of a dormant Tianchi caldera volcano on China's border with North Korea, where water temperatures at the source can exceed 80°C from intense volcanic heat. The landscape is subalpine and pristine, with Korean pine forests, waterfalls, and the sacred Tianchi crater lake above the tree line forming one of Northeast Asia's most iconic natural scenes. Natural bathing pools cooled by stream mixing allow soaking at around 40-45°C with views of steaming fumaroles on the valley walls. This is one of the few places in China where genuinely wild volcanic hot springs remain accessible to visitors.
