Zhangjiajie Avatar Spring, in the city of Zhangjiajie in northwestern Hunan Province, draws on sulfate thermal waters in the landscape that inspired the floating Hallelujah Mountains of James Cameron's film Avatar — the extraordinary sandstone pillar formations of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, the world's first national forest park in China, where thousands of quartzite sandstone columns rise hundreds of metres from the subtropical forest floor in formations that have no geological parallel anywhere on Earth. The naturally warm sulfate waters complement the extraordinary visual spectacle of the Zhangjiajie landscape, providing restorative thermal bathing after trekking through the vertiginous glass-floored suspension bridges, mountain cable cars, and forest pathways of the national park.
