Rivera, a small town in Colombia's Huila department founded in 1888 under the name San Mateo in the area known as 'Aguas Calientes,' takes its current name from Colombian writer José Eustasio Rivera, who was born on these lands. It became an independent municipality in 1943 and has built its identity around its hot springs, earning the nickname 'Land of Thermal Waters and Poets.'
A local distinction: Rivera's thermal waters stand out for their remarkable clarity and lack of sulfur, unlike many other Colombian springs. Three pools at different temperatures — roughly 33°C, 36°C and 42°C — welcome visitors amid mountain scenery and tropical vegetation, just a short distance from Neiva.
