First recorded in 1341 in a Teplá Abbey document as the "Auschowitzer springs," the waters of Mariánské Lázně only rose to prominence after 1779, thanks to abbey physician Josef Nehr. The spa town officially opened in 1818. Over forty cold mineral springs, rich in carbon dioxide, rise throughout the town. Since 2021, it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Insider tip — Mariánské Lázně (Marienbad), part of the UNESCO Czech spa triangle, is best explored on foot between its neoclassical colonnades and the Singing Fountain that performs musical water shows at set times. The real ritual is sipping from each spring with a traditional spouted cup — every source has a distinct mineral character. Greener and more serene than nearby Karlovy Vary.
