The story of Bad Füssing begins with a stroke of luck: in 1938, drilling in search of oil in the hamlet of Safferstetten brought roughly 3,000 litres of water per minute to the surface, at 56°C. Spa operations and guest accommodation began in the 1950s, and the town earned the title 'Bad' in 1969.
Since then, the town has grown into one of Europe's most visited spa resorts, drawing several million overnight stays a year according to regional tourism boards. Additional thermal springs have since been developed, today feeding more than a hundred pools across several establishments, including the Johannesbad, one of Germany's largest thermal complexes with 4,500 m² of water surface.
