The story of Therme Eins begins, as is often the case in Bavaria, with a failed oil hunt: in 1938, prospectors searching for petroleum near Bad Füssing, in the Passau district, struck an unexpected mineral spring at roughly 1,000 metres underground. It was American soldiers, in 1947, who improvised the first makeshift baths for their veterans, turning simple concreted drainage pipes upside down.
That improvised beginning eventually grew into Bad Füssing's original bathing facility, today known as Therme Eins, which now offers twelve pools at staggered temperatures, a steam bath and a health centre. The sulphurous, slightly acidic water feeding them has since built the reputation of the whole Passauer Land thermal spa region in Bavaria.
