Almeida de Sayago is a granite village in the province of Zamora in Castile and Leon, set in the Arribes del Duero Natural Park, a spectacular transboundary canyon landscape on the Spanish-Portuguese border where the Douro river has carved 200-metre gorges through the ancient Precambrian granite of the Iberian Meseta. Its bicarbonate spring waters filter through the ancient Precambrian granite and gneiss formations of one of the geologically oldest landscapes in the Iberian Peninsula, producing a naturally soft and mineral-clean water. The combination of granite gorge hiking in the Arribes del Duero, traditional Sayago wool weaving, local Arribes wine tasting, and mineral spring bathing creates a richly authentic and culturally layered experience in one of Spain's most remote and scenically spectacular border regions.
