Balneario de Liérganes draws bicarbonated mineral springs in the Miera valley village of Liérganes in Cantabria, a picturesque town of porticoed streets and baroque manor houses set in a landscape of green hills and chestnut forests that was once a centre of royal cannon foundries supplying the Spanish Armada. The town is best known for the legend of the Fish-Man of Liérganes, recorded in 1673 by Inquisition witnesses who testified that a young swimmer named Francisco de la Vega Casar was reportedly captured from the sea near Cádiz transformed into a half-human, half-piscine creature after years living underwater — one of the strangest and most persistently retold legends of the Spanish coastal tradition. The bicarbonated waters of Liérganes, long appreciated for their refreshing mineral qualities, flow in one of Cantabria's most charming valley towns, whose porticoes, stone bridges, and riverside setting have been preserved with unusual care by a community proud of both its thermal and its legendary heritage.

Insider tip — The legend of the Fish-Man of Liérganes is one of the most famous in Spain — Francisco de la Vega Casar, brought back from the sea after 9 years in the water, had become half-man, half-fish according to 17th-century witnesses. Thermal bathing on the edge of the fantastic.
