Balneario de Carratraca is one of Andalusia's most historically significant spa establishments, located in the Málaga highlands village of Carratraca where extraordinarily potent sulphurous spring waters emerge at temperatures around 18°C — unusually cold for thermal spring use, requiring special bathing protocols. The balneario's fame reached its peak in the Romantic era when illustrious visitors including Lord Byron, Empress Eugénie de Montijo, and Queen Isabella II of Spain came to take the celebrated sulphurous waters. The 19th-century bathing halls, colonnaded galleries, and modest village setting have been sensitively restored to preserve their remarkable historical character, recognised as part of the Conjunto Histórico of Carratraca. Today the balneario continues to offer traditional bathing programmes using the same waters that attracted European aristocracy, artists, and travellers for over two centuries.

Insider tip — Balneario de Carratraca clings to a white-walled village in the limestone sierras inland from Málaga, where sulfurous waters have attracted illustrious visitors including Lord Byron and Alexandre Dumas in the 19th century. The neo-Mudéjar spa building dating from 1869 has been sensitively restored, and the whitewashed village itself is one of the most picturesque in Andalusia. Visit in May or early June before the inland heat arrives and the almond and cherry orchards are still fragrant.
