Saillagouse in the Cerdagne plateau of the Pyrénées-Orientales is a thermal destination set in one of France's highest and sunniest inhabited plateaux, a bowl-shaped valley at 1,200 metres altitude shared with Spain, known as the sunniest area in mainland France with over 3,000 hours of sunshine annually. The sulphurous springs here emerge from the Pyrenean granite and have been used for therapeutic bathing since the Middle Ages, and the nearby Llo and Dorres thermal pools include one of France's most dramatically positioned outdoor natural hot spring pools — Les Bains de Llo, a carved stone pool perched on a cliff above a gorge.
