Tucked into the wooded hills west of Jaén, in Andalusia, the Balneario de Jabalcuz owes its renown to sulphurous waters first recorded in a municipal register in 1594 and developed into a bathing establishment from the early 17th century. The site's golden age ran from the late 19th century through the first half of the 20th: in 1925, architect Antonio Flórez Urdapilleta drew up a sweeping renovation project for then-owner and government minister José del Prado y Palacio.
The gardens surrounding the buildings, designed by landscaper Cecilio Rodríguez Cuevas, were inaugurated in 1926 alongside the casino-restaurant designed by architect Alberto López de Asiaín. In 2009, the regional government of Andalusia listed the entire spa and its gardens in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage, recognizing this hillside site's historic value.
