Regarded as one of the oldest spa establishments in Galicia, the Balneario de Caldas de Partovia, near O Carballiño in Ourense province, takes its name from Roman times — "Puesto de la Vida" (Parto-Via) — when it was already used by legionaries stationed in the area. During the Middle Ages, the site fell under the grange and priory that the Oseira Monastery held at Partovia.

Passed to public and later private management in the nineteenth century, the establishment joined the royal Corps of Bath Physicians in 1816, entering the select circle of spa towns with a medical service. In 1928, its mineral waters were declared of public utility by royal decree-law, cementing its reputation across twentieth-century thermal Galicia.

Insider tip — Caldas de Partovia rises from the Miño River valley in Ourense province, one of the most thermally active corners of Galicia, where hot sulfurous springs have been channeled into balneario facilities since the 19th century. The naturally carbonated water carries a gentle effervescence alongside its sulfur notes, prized for skin and circulatory treatments. The site is framed by riverside granite outcrops and dense Galician woodland — the contrast of dark rock and steaming clear water is especially striking in autumn.
