Termas de Cauquenes is a historic thermal resort on the banks of the Río Cachapoal in the Machalí commune of Chile's O'Higgins Region, renowned as one of the oldest spa establishments in South America and the site visited by Charles Darwin in 1834 during his Beagle voyage through the Andes. The waters, classified as bicarbonated and sulfurous, flow from the Andean cordillera at elevated temperatures and have been valued since colonial times within a long thermal tradition. The estate preserves nineteenth-century architecture and is set amid Andean foothills along the Ruta del Ácido, 31 km from Rancagua.

Insider tip — Termas de Cauquenes is one of Chile's oldest thermal establishments, visited by Charles Darwin during his Beagle voyage in 1834 and praised in his journals for the remarkable curative powers of its sulfurous waters. The historic stone buildings date to the early 19th century and sit in a canyon of the Cachapoal River at the base of the Andean precordillera. The property retains its colonial character with arched corridors and tiled soaking rooms fed by waters that emerge at over 50 degrees from fractures in the volcanic rock. The elevation and dry Andean microclimate mean clear skies are the norm, and the night sky above the canyon is spectacular.
