On the banks of the Guadiana River, in the Campo de Calatrava region of Ciudad Real province, these baths take their name from the nearby Molino del Emperador, though locals also call them Baños de Trujillo after the landowner who turned them into a spa in the early 19th century. Opened in 1847, the site featured a large semicircular pool fed by ferruginous, acidulous water compared to that of the Fuensanta de Pozuelo spring, and was declared of public utility in 1883.

Popular through the 19th and early 20th centuries, the baths later fell into neglect, and a drop in the water table caused the spring to temporarily vanish. The site, since restored, stands as a reminder of the rich bathing heritage of the Campo de Calatrava, a volcanic region dotted with hot springs.

Insider tip — Baños del Hervidero — whose name means the boiling or bubbling baths — is a celebrated carbonated mineral spring in Ciudad Real Province, Castilla-La Mancha, where CO2-rich waters emerge cold at around 22°C. The effervescent, iron-tinged waters have been bottled and used medicinally since the 18th century, particularly for digestive and cardiac ailments. The flat La Mancha plain surrounding the spring evokes the landscape of Cervantes's Don Quixote, placing this unique spa in the heart of Spanish literary geography.
