Perched nearly 200 meters above the Meander plain, the white terraces of Pamukkale — literally the "cotton castle" — took shape over millennia as calcite settled out of hot water spilling from the cliff face. This landscape of petrified waterfalls and stepped pools, paired with the ruins of ancient Hierapolis founded in the 2nd century BC under the Seleucid Empire, earned the site joint UNESCO World Heritage status in 1988.

Atop the travertines, Cleopatra's Pool remains the most celebrated spot for a dip: legend holds that Mark Antony gifted this pool, scattered with submerged ancient columns, to the Egyptian queen. Seventeen springs feed the site as a whole, where visitors can still wade barefoot through the open-air white terraces today.

Insider tip — This open-air thermal pool near Pamukkale taps the same calcium-rich hydrothermal system responsible for the famous white travertine terraces. Bathing here means floating above ancient Roman columns submerged beneath the turquoise surface. The calcium content is so high that long soaks leave a faint silky film on the skin. Visit at sunrise before tour groups arrive to experience the terraces glowing pink and the pool in near-solitude.
