It all began around 1920, when oil drilling in the São Pedro region struck no black gold but instead released an unexpected mineral water. In 1934, engineer Octavio Moura Andrade, together with his brother Antonio Joaquim, founded the company 'Águas Sulfídricas e Termais de São Pedro' and built the bathhouse, laying the foundation for what would become the town of Águas de São Pedro, officially established by the São Paulo state government in 1940.

Among the springs tapped, Fonte Juventude stands out for a sulfur content ranked among the highest in the world, confirmed as early as 1935 by the University of São Paulo's technological research institute. The SPA Thermal, now named after its founder, still carries on this legacy with separate wings for men and women and its sulfurous water baths.

Insider tip — SPA Thermal in Águas de São Pedro is set in one of Brazil's smallest and most celebrated thermal spa municipalities, located in the interior of São Paulo state on the Piracicaba River plateau. The town's mineral waters were discovered in the 1930s during oil exploration and quickly attracted a sophisticated clientele from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The thermal waters here are among the most sulphur-free and mildly alkaline in South America, making them particularly gentle and suitable for extended soaking.
