Águas de São Pedro, a small town in São Paulo state, exists thanks to an unusual ambition: building an entire city around its thermal springs. Businessman Octávio de Moura Andrade, together with his brother Antônio Joaquim, founded the company Águas Sulfídricas e Termais de São Pedro. As early as 1934, a modest bathhouse was built at one of the springs, now known as "Fonte da Juventude," recognisable by its water's characteristic sulphur scent.

The SPA Thermal Doutor Octávio de Moura Andrade, now the flagship facility of the resort, is a public space where visitors take immersion baths in this sulphurous water. Organised into separate wings for men and women, it also offers facial and body aesthetic treatments. The site still embodies its founder's original vision: a town conceived from the outset around hydrotherapy and wellness tourism.

Insider tip — Spa Thermal Doutor Octavio Moura Andrade draws from the Aguas de Sao Pedro aquifer, one of South America's rare naturally carbonated thermal springs, whose radioactive-free bicarbonate-carbonated water was declared the most complete mineral water in the world by a 1960s study. The effervescent bubbles cling to skin and stimulate circulation noticeably. The small spa town itself was purpose-built around the spring and retains a tranquil 1950s resort atmosphere. Early morning sessions before the day-trip crowds arrive offer the most peaceful experience.
