Hotwells is a historic spa district in Bristol, situated at the foot of the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge on the banks of the Avon Gorge, where bicarbonate-rich thermal spring water at around 24°C once made it one of the most fashionable spa resorts in Georgian England. The springs attracted luminaries including Alexander Pope, John Wesley, and the Duchess of Beaufort during the 18th century, and the elegant Hotwells crescent architecture survives as testimony to Bristol's forgotten spa heritage. Today while the original pump room no longer operates, the Avon Gorge and Clifton's spectacular scenery preserve the atmospheric grandeur of this historic Bristol spa neighbourhood.
