Abastumani is a historic resort and astronomical observatory town in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of southern Georgia, nestled in a forested valley of the Lesser Caucasus at an elevation of around 1,300 meters, where naturally cold oligomineral springs and the exceptionally clean mountain air have attracted visitors since the 19th century. The resort was established as a mountain wellness destination by Tsar Nicholas II's family, who frequented it within a long thermal and clean-air tradition, and the surrounding forests of ancient fir and beech were preserved as part of the resort complex established here under the tsarist administration. The Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory, built in 1932 to take advantage of the area's exceptional atmospheric clarity, remains one of the Caucasus's most important astronomical research facilities, adding a dimension of scientific distinction to the resort's restorative character. Abastumani's mineral springs, clean air, ancient forest, and star-filled sky make it one of Georgia's most distinctive and holistically restorative destinations.
