Xino Nero Springs in the Kozani district of Western Macedonia in northern Greece — their name meaning sour water or acid water in Greek — are naturally carbonated bicarbonate springs at around 800 metres altitude in the Voras mountain range on the border with North Macedonia, prized since antiquity for their refreshing effervescence and pleasant mineral character. The springs emerge cold (around 12°C) in a mountain landscape of beech and oak forest, and have been developed as a small spa and bottled water facility serving the regional tourism market. The Voras range (also known as Nidže on the Macedonian side) is a beautiful and relatively unvisited mountain area with extensive hiking trails, traditional Macedonian villages and clear mountain lakes. The broader Kozani region offers access to the Aliakmon river gorge, the Byzantine monuments of Veria and the archaeological site of ancient Aigai — the first capital of the Macedonian kingdom.
