Methana Thermal Springs

Methana Thermal Springs are sulfurous geothermal springs on the Methana Peninsula, a dramatic active volcanic peninsula jutting into the Saronic Gulf in Attica, Greece — one of the only active volcanic areas on the Greek mainland — where sulfurous oligomineral waters emerge from the andesitic volcanic geology in a landscape of black lava flows, fumarolic vents, and dramatic coastal scenery just 50 kilometers from Athens. The volcanic activity of Methana has been recorded since antiquity, with ancient authors describing eruptions that created new land in the sea and steam venting from the earth, and the therapeutic sulfurous springs have been used since classical times by visitors traveling from Athens and Corinth by sea. Today the peninsula's thermal baths, accessible by ferry from Piraeus, remain an active spa destination where the distinctive sulfurous mineral waters from the volcanic system are traditionally valued by bathers in a volcanic setting unique on the Greek mainland.
