Near the Novo Selo suburb south of Štip, where the Bregalnica river emerges from its canyon, the Kežovica spa likely dates to the late 17th century, built by the Ottomans to make use of the region's volcanic activity, with a wellness centre added in 1948. It stands today as one of North Macedonia's oldest historic thermal sites.
The main spring emerges at 74°C, carrying sodium chloride, sodium sulphate and sodium oxide, and is slightly radioactive. A bathhouse was built near the spring, alongside a hospital unit specializing in physiotherapy carried out in pools fed directly by the mineral water.
Insider tip — Kezhovitsa is a thermal spring site in the Axios River valley of Greek Macedonia, near the North Macedonian border in an agricultural lowland landscape of wheat fields and poplars. The sulfurous spring waters emerge from deep Paleozoic basement rocks and have modest flow rates, making it a tranquil and unhurried destination. The flat Thessalonian plain opens broadly here, with Kaimakchalan mountain visible on the horizon to the north.
