Los Vahos

Los Vahos ('The Vapours') near Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, is a sulfurous natural sauna experience rather than a conventional hot spring pool — volcanic steam vents emerge from the volcanic ground of the Zunil massif and are captured in a rustic earthen structure where visitors sit within the natural sulfurous steam for a traditional therapeutic sweating experience. This unique thermal format — using volcanic steam rather than liquid water for bathing — reflects a pre-Columbian Mesoamerican tradition of steam bathing (temazcal) that predates the European spa tradition by millennia.
