Orosháza Gyopáros Thermal Spa draws sulfate-rich geothermal waters in the southeastern Alföld near the Gyopáros Lake — a shallow soda lake and protected bird reserve whose alkaline shores shelter migrating waterfowl and whose shores have been part of the local bathing tradition since the 19th century when Orosháza developed as a spa destination. The sulfate mineral waters are used in balneotherapy in a compact spa complex serving the agricultural flatlands of Békés county, where Hungarian rural life has maintained traditional peasant farming practices and folk embroidery traditions longer than almost any other Hungarian region. The nearby Gyula fortress — one of Hungary's best-preserved medieval brick castles — and the Körös river valley's thermal bathing culture at Gyula and Mezőberény create a southeastern Hungarian thermal circuit of authentic provincial character.

Insider tip — The Gyopáros Thermal Spa at Orosháza is one of the oldest spas on the Hungarian Plain, drawing alkaline-sulfate water from depths of 1,200 meters. The outdoor lake-style pool is surrounded by parkland and is famous for its floating wooden walkways over the thermal water. The surrounding region is flat puszta landscape where Great Bustards still roam the grasslands.
