In the heart of Nagyszénás, in Békés County, the Parkfürdő draws its thermal water from almost 3,000 metres underground. Emerging at 96°C, it is cooled to 36-38°C before filling the resort's open-air pools. Alkaline-hydrogen-carbonate in composition, the water also carries fluoride and iodide ions, a mineral signature that is fairly unusual for a small town on Hungary's Great Plain.
The site's current look comes from a municipal renovation completed at the end of 2015, but its story starts much earlier: construction began in 1959, and the first pools opened in 1964. Today, four outdoor pools and a 90°C Finnish sauna make up a modest, family-oriented offering, a world away from Hungary's grand spa towns.
