Hagymatikum Makó

Hagymatikum in Makó, Csongrád-Csanád County, is Hungary's most architecturally ambitious contemporary thermal bath — a striking organic architecture building designed by the legendary Hungarian architect Imre Makovecz in a form inspired by the onion, honouring Makó's identity as Hungary's onion capital, whose Makói hagyma (Makó onion) is a regional gastronomic icon. The thermal complex draws bicarbonate mineral water from the Pannonian Basin and houses indoor pools, wellness facilities, and a sauna world within Makovecz's extraordinary building — a timber and organic-form structure that is simultaneously a spa and a major work of late twentieth-century architecture. Hagymatikum won the 'World's Best Thermal Spa' award at the 2013 World Travel Awards, cementing its status as a globally recognised jewel of Hungarian thermal and architectural culture.
