Balfi Gyógyfürdő is a traditional thermal spa in Balf, a small spa village on the shores of Lake Fertő (Neusiedler See) in northwestern Hungary near the Austrian border, where bicarbonate-rich geothermal water has been part of a long thermal tradition since Roman times when the settlement was part of the Pannonian province. The spa, one of Hungary's oldest documented thermal sites, sits within the Lake Fertő-Hanság National Park — part of the UNESCO World Heritage Fertő/Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape — in a setting of exceptional natural and historical significance. The surrounding landscape of reed beds, steppe grassland, and the shallow soda lake, combined with the Baroque Hungarian and Austrian border town heritage, gives Balf a remarkably layered Central European character.
