Batur Hot Springs

Batur Hot Springs — Toya Bungkah — at the base of the Batur volcano on the northwestern shore of Lake Batur crater in Bali are among the most dramatically situated thermal springs in Southeast Asia, where the geothermal energy of an active caldera system heats sulphurous springs emerging directly at the lakeside. The springs can be accessed through open-air bathing facilities on the crater lake shore, where temperatures range from pleasantly warm to uncomfortably hot depending on proximity to the vents, with the constantly steaming waters of Lake Batur and the stark black lava fields of the 2021 eruption creating an intensely volcanic atmosphere. The Bali Aga village of Trunyan on the opposite shore of the crater lake, where the dead are laid in open-air cemeteries in an ancient pre-Hindu ritual, adds a deep cultural dimension to this extraordinary landscape. Sunrise bathing in the hot springs with Mount Batur reflected in the crater lake is one of Bali's most memorable nature experiences.
